Why several causes and connections often play a role in irritable bowel syndrome.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) usually does not have just one single cause. Often several factors interact: changes in the microbiome, an imbalance of certain gut bacteria, fungi or parasites, inflammatory processes, a disturbed gut barrier, intolerances or histamine reactions. Stress and the gut-brain axis can also play a role. It is therefore worth not looking at symptoms in isolation, but searching for possible connections.
